Neverwinter Nights. It's got an obscenely long amount of replayability thanks to the 22 years of modding.

The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild

Maybe a common one, but I loved it so much, it has so much to offer, and is tons of fun, even almost 10 years later! Oh my god.. the switch is almost 10 years old.. :?

I think because it was the first video game I ever played and had the whoosh, you are really doing a thing feeling, aged probably around 6 or 7 years old, Streets of Rage.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streets_of_Rage

It's a co-op game where little me (I was tiny) could stroll through the streets of a dirty metropolis (side-scrolling) as a female character. Meanwhile, my big brother was also punching evil punks and baddies and hitting them with rusty crow bars, while picking up apples (yum!) and power ups, safe in the knowledge that if things got scary big brother was there to kill the baddies too.

If I picked up a power up he needed, I could just drop it for him to pick it up.

Also, I could do tricks, like ballet/choreography moves so he could throw me at the bad guys. It was world enlarging for me emotionally and psychologically and so empowering from such a young age. At the end of each level I could push a single button and call for police backup (the limited use power move) to help take out the big bad guy too. A police car screenched onto the scene and guns from the sunroof mowed down the big boss.

So, do I play it often? No, but my memories of playing it are amazing and I love it. I think a lot of 'modern' kids probably love mario kart for the same thrilling feeling of being small but still empowered and involved in the game play.

I think it's a work of art.

Oh boy thats a good question. Mine would either be oneshot or outer wilds. Oneshot absolutely blew me away with the way it handles 4th wall breaks (no spoilers, play the original edition if your on windows, its a mich better experience ;) and outer wilds also blew me away with its puzzle quality. Im still trying to work my way through the dlc, but im playing it on and off because i dont really enjoy horror that much.

Gauntlet IV by Tengen is one of my absolute favorites. It was originally an arcade game, but it was ported to the Sega Genesis. My brother and I played the Quest Mode, only available on the Sega Genesis version, when we were kids. It took us thirteen years to beat it without passwords. The story is in the video, and it tells it better than I can, so I won't even try. Each of the five levels has ten floors of labyrinthian dungeon filled with continuously spawning enemies you have to traverse through as your health dwindles! Some surprises await you, both bitter and sweet, however. The only way to replenish your health is to pick up food. It has upgrades you can purchase for your character, as well as hidden secrets. The game even has multiple endings! The soundtrack is absolutely legendary as well! It will make you feel as if you are on an epic journey!

goose, I self-host Minecraft (world I ported from Bedrock to Java), maybe some time we can play. It’s fun but also I have trouble playing on worlds besides my main sometimes just because of time investment. If you already have / know cool Java servers I’d be down to try them though.

For a while it was Tetris Effect but now it’s Psychonauts. All my favorite games have something (at least tangentially) to do with the human condition, except the Crash games because he’s just my goofball.

Psychonauts is just one of those things where there’s not only a lot of background lore but it actually feels in service of an important story and atmosphere. Plus the art direction is so well-done, it made me draw again.

For me the first game has an edge over the second- the adventure elements fit the premise of the game so well and are so unique for a platformer, the level structures are more varied, the humor hits harder- but 1 and 2 sort of make one complete package for me. Frankly 2 would not stand at the top of my favorite games on its own the way 1 can, but I also think that speaks to how tightly woven it is as a sequel, and I’m not saying it’s a bad game otherwise. Not sure how to phrase it, but I’m really splitting hairs because they’re both excellent anyway. I don’t have a VR headset, so I never played the VR game, though.

Also, this is super cool. Streets of Rage, the original ones are missing some modern stuff I’m too used to (and I did play them) but I can absolutely see how they were advanced for their time and I honestly think they hold up better than a lot from that era. It’s just I have trouble with a lot of pre-6th gen games lol. Streets of Rage 4 is one of my favorite games though, I know it can be divisive, what did you think about it?

I haven't played Streets of Rage 4 actually but I would love to. I should ask my brother if he wants to play it with me on PC! Thanks for letting me know it even exists. 8-)

Edit: I played it with my brother and it was so fun!
