Life Of A Wizard

Post by cnroddball »

Life Of A Wizard is a text-based Create Your Own Adventure story where you write the 80-year autobiography of an archmage. Is the archmage a man or a woman? Will he or she fall in love and get married? Will he or she have any kids? What kind of magic will the archmage practice? All of that and more are up for debate. Here on the Onio forum, you will decide each part of the story. Welcome to...

Life Of A Wizard

Our archmage's story starts where every story starts: the beginning.
Wizards. From the kindly old white-bearded casters wearing robes with stars and moons to the battle-hardened war-mage throwing fireballs at dragons. The royal family has always had one on hand: a wise diviner to lead the kingdom into peace or a dangerous conjurer to dominate all of the land under one rule. Or perhaps a divine healer? An alchemist? Or even a necromancer? The combinations are boundless. Let me tell you my story.

I wasn't always a wizened old wizard, you know. Wizards begin their lives the same as everyone else. I was born in a small village in the Kingdom of Daria. King Norbert and Queen Audrey reigned in the capital city of Tornassa, which was many miles away from my small village.
How did our main character's parents feel about him or her? You can decide by voting here! Voting is open for 24 hours. The option with the most votes is what we'll be moving forward with, and the results will be shared here. Let the story of our yet-to-be-named archmage begin!

Were our main character's parents good people, or did they not want him or her?

Is our archmage a boy or a girl?

Also, if you'd like a thread to discuss the story, come to a consensus on choices, etc, feel free to set it up!

The votes are in, and our archmage's name is...

They named me Byron. I grew up in the village of Elmvale where nearly everyone was human, although there were a few exceptions. The entire kingdom of Daria was like that, besides the dwarves under the Grey Mountains, the elves in the Alderheart Forest, and the orcs in the wilderness to the west. Our kingdom was very racially tolerant when I was young.
Now it's time to decide what race our archmage and his parents are. We're starting to get into some meaty stuff, and in the way of options, our cup runneth over! Don't forget to vote!

Looks like Byron and his parents are...

Image
It was sometimes a little difficult for me, being a half-elf growing up in a village of humans, but I managed. The myth about our longevity had been greatly exaggerated, considering that my parents were actually the same age as everyone else's.
(Nature +15, Thievery +15, Willpower +3 and Body +2)

My parents weren't poor, as we always seemed to have what we needed when I was growing up. They always made sure I had nice clothes and good shoes. During the holidays, they always seemed to find enough coin to buy me a special toy and have a big meal. I still remember my mother's soft voice when she sang me to sleep and my father's calm strength whenever I awoke in the night from a bad dream.

Even as a young child, I was drawn into the unknown. I remember my first magical experience, even though I was only five years old. I didn't know where my parents were, but I wandered off alone…
We're getting into stats now, people! Image

So, it's time to decide what Byron's first magical experience is! He wandered off alone...
  • ...into the forest.
  • ...into a graveyard.
  • ...into the temple.
  • ...into the village witch's hut.
Take your pick!

The votes are in, and it seems curiosity got the better of Byron!

Image
The hut was empty; I don't know where the witch was that day. I saw dried herbs, magical talismans, and trinkets all over the shelves. A large black cauldron sat over a small fire in the middle of the hut.
  • I threw all sorts of dried herbs and ingredients into her cauldron, making a big mess.
  • I stole her crystal ball.
  • I made friends with her pet rat, which started following me around everywhere.
  • She returned and read my fortune.
Curiosity may have brought Byron here, but what will dictate his next action?

Edit: You don't have to put your name when you respond to the poll. I prefer you don't. I just can't turn that part of the poll off.

The results are in, and it looks like:

I made friends with her pet rat, which started following me around everywhere. I was playing with the rat a few days later, and the witch said I could keep it. She warned me that if I kept the rat, it would be mine forever.

Did I find my familiar that day?
Will Byron's familiar be the village witch's rat, or will he wait for another familiar?

Disclaimer: Don't fill in a name for the contact details part of the poll. I can't get rid of that. The poll site doesn't allow me to, but it's free.

We've got our first tie! Looks like Stu and Remy are neck and neck! It's time for a tiebreaker vote!
