Got a free firewall. any suggestions?

Post by wilco »

So I managed to snag a Sophos SG125 firewall for free. I really have no use for it as a firewall since my network is already well managed.

I do enjoy self hosting; I have a small HP desktop re-purposed to run Ubuntu server and a handful of docker containers, so I figure i can use it for something. My first idea was to run linux on it and then go from there but I have yet to figure that out lol. I was trying to find some documentation on it earlier but fell short. Any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated! :]

( also iirc it has 4 or 8 gb of ram and a 60gb 2.5in ssd (which could easily be upgraded))

bonus question: right now I use jellyfin for TV shows/movies but it is a bit too resource heavy. if you know of a lighter program lmk :D

Nice loot! I think it has kind of a cool look to it, and making hardware do something that it wasn't specifically meant for is always fun! It might be kind of fun to host a website about firewalls and security on a firewall? That's my only idea xD I saw something about installing OPNSense and using it as a router, but I'm sure you've no need for that.
